Volunteer Assisted Shopping Program

The Volunteer Assisted Shopping Program makes available to at-risk seniors, the services of trained volunteers for weekly grocery shopping excursions.

Service is provided to persons who may need assistance with shopping, whether it be due to medical or sensory difficulties that do not allow a person to carry out some tasks on their own.

This program provides personalized assistance with the essential tasks of grocery shopping as well as creating an environment which stimulates social interaction.

Individuals utilizing this program will benefit through social interaction, by maintaining and keeping their independence.  It also allows individuals to make their own choices which can only lead to a healthier life and increases self-esteem.

The Volunteer Assisted Shopping Program offers transportation to the grocery store, assistance on and off the bus, assistance with reading labels, lifting items from the shelf, and companionship.

Shopping excursions run Fridays between 1:00pm and 3:00pm.  Shoppers are picked up by the HandiDart bus between 12 noon and 1:00pm.  Volunteers meet the bus at the grocery store and help shoppers with their weekly purchases.  A short coffee time after shopping is a highlight for all the shoppers.
